Given the information that you can upgrade to 10, from 7 or 8, for free in the first year of Windows 10's release. You would be foolish for not upgrading from either. What Microsoft is doing is creating an environment where they will not have to support Windows 7 passed End Of Life like they did with XP. Essentially, when Windows 7 reaches End Of Life, despite how popular it is now, you will likely not get support - and End Of Life is approaching rather quickly.

I have not agreed with the direction Microsoft has gone since Windows XP. Windows 2000 gained a lot of support because of how closely it related to XP, but I feel that 2000 was the last good OS made by Microsoft. Microsoft still ties all the features into the OS and isn't setup to be modular(update anything without a reboot - which was supposed to be solved as of Vista).

In other news.. Steam has Linux support and more games are being released spanning PC(Mac, Linux, Windows) and Consoles(Xbox, PlayStation).
